Groom-To-Be Commits Suicide, Over Wedding Gift Pressure

A man from east China’s Anhui province killed himself two weeks before the date of his wedding, reportedly due to the immense pressure to buy “betrothal gifts” for the bride’s family, according to his parents.
Xiaolei got engaged to his sweetheart, Lanlan, last December and was soon asked by his fiancé’s family for 10,000 yuan and other gifts. The total value of the “bride-price” came to more than 30,000 yuan.
