A 7-year-old girl was left with a permanent scar after being mauled by a dog as she stroked it.Kiera Young's lip was ripped off by the dog while she stroked it at a relative's birthday party.The child and her family had travelled to the Whitham Tavern, in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, on February 27 to celebrate her grandmother's sister's birthday. At the party, the little girl, who is autistic, was petting an Akita dog when it suddenly launched at her and dug its fangs into her lip. Kiera's grandmother Sharon, 57, watched in horror as the attack unfolded and she was powerless to protect her grandchild. The girl was immediately rushed to the hospital where she underwent a three-hour surgery to stitch her lip back together. 
Doctors have warned she will be permanently scarred even though the wound has healed.Narrating the incident, Sharon, from Nottingham, said: "We had gone down to Boston for my sister's 60th birthday and we had gone for a drink at the Witham Tavern."I walked to the pub with other family members, whilst Kiera went down in my sister's car."She had approached a couple who were sitting outside the pub with their dog, a black-and-white Akita."They told her the dog was child friendly and had been told it was fine to stroke, so she petted it."The couple went in and then came out again, and Kiera went back and again was told it was fine, but when she stroked it a second time, it attacked her face. 
"The owners pulled it back and that caused the gum to pull away from her lip."I could hear her screaming from the other side of the river and just ran to her."When I got there, I just wanted to get her to hospital."My nephew and I rushed her to the Pilgrim Hospital in his car rather than wait for the ambulance."She was screaming and in a lot of pain." 
The child is not only physically scarred but also mentally scarred as a result of the attack. "She now backs off and keeps her distance when we see dogs in the street. She seems to have been mentally scarred by the incident and we are doing our best to help her," Her grandma revealed.
