Governor Ihedioha denies ordering the demolition of monuments built by Okorocha

Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has denied reports he ordered the demolition of some monuments built by his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha. Earlier today, a team of state government officials in company of some firece looking soldiers, began the demolition of the Akachi center, a tourist site built by Rochas Okorocha  and was commissioned by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, last week. Many people believed the demolition was on the order of the new state governor. The governor has since denied this claim. Read his statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Osuji Steve, below...GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATEPRESS RELEASEImo State government has no hand in the demolition of Akachi statueContrary to reports emanating from Owerri, the Government of Imo State has no hand in the pulling down of the gargantuan Akachi statue near Aba Road, Owerri. pic.twitter.com/ohPFgdNjrd— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019In the same vein, government seizes this opportunity to warn Imo people to desist from unruly behavior and remain law abiding as anyone caught breaking the law would be prosecuted. The security agencies have been put on alert to maintain law and order across the state.— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019At about noon on Thursday, a mammoth crowd had besieged the Akachi statue hacking at it and trying to pull it down, apparently acting in pent up anger.— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019Another version suggests that the contractors who have been working rather endlessly around the statue for some time but who may have not been paid, may be responsible for the breaching of the giant statue.— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019Does it stand to reason that a government that is barely 24 hours old, with no handover notes whatsoever and without an office to work from yet would concern itself with an ordinary statue?— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019Does it stand to reason that a government that is barely 24 hours old, with no handover notes whatsoever and without an office to work from yet would concern itself with an ordinary statue?— Emeka Ihedioha (@EmekaIhedioha) May 30, 2019  The post Governor Ihedioha denies ordering the demolition of monuments built by Okorocha appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

British socialite Claus Von Bulow, who was convicted for the attempted murder of his wife, dies at 92

British socialite Claus Von Bulow who was convicted for the attempted murder of his wife, dies at 92Claus Von Bülow,  a popular Danish-British socialite, has died at the age of 92. Claus was convicted for the attempted murder of his wife Sunny von Bülow in 1979. He was charged with deliberately injecting insulin into her, sending her into an irreversible coma.  The trial was one of the most sensational of the 20th century. Prosecutors claimed Claus wanted to get rid of his wife so he could inherit her fortune and continue his relationship with his mistress, a soap opera actress. After being convicted, Claus was sentenced to 30 years in prison, and then was famously represented on appeal by Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz. He successfully argued items were illegally seized and the notes from key witness interviews had not been turned over to the defense. Claus was then retried and found not guilty in 1985. His conviction was overturned and he was ultimately acquitted of trying to murder his wife. He then moved to Europe where he died at the age of 92. Claus' acquittal shocked the world at the time and inspired the movie "Reversal of Fortune," which chronicles the murder of  Sunny von Bülow and professor Alan Dershowitz's appeal. Jeremy Irons, who played Claus, won an Oscar for Best Actor.   The post British socialite Claus Von Bulow, who was convicted for the attempted murder of his wife, dies at 92 appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Update: Naira Marley's fraud case adjourned till October 22nd for commencement of trial

Justice Nicholas I. Oweibo of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday, May 30, 2019, granted bail to a Nigerian artiste, Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, in the sum of N2,000,000.00( Two Million Naira). Marley was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on May 20, 2019 on an 11-count charge bordering on cyber crime. One of the counts reads: “That you, Azeez Adeshina Fashola, aka Naira Marley, and Yad Isril (still at large), on or about the 26th day of November, 2018, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, conspired amongst yourself to use Access card no : 5264711020433662 issued to persons other than you in a bid to obtain gain and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27(1) (b) of the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention etc Act 2015 and punishable under Section 33(2) of the same Act.”He pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him and was remanded in prison custody. At the last sitting, counsel to the defendant, Taiwo Oluwa Ore- Agba, had asked the court for a date to hear the bail application on behalf his client. Consequently, Justice Oweibo had adjourned the case to May 30, 2019(today) for hearing of the bail application. At today’s sitting, counsel to the defendant, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, adopted the bail application before the court and urged the court to exercise its discretionary power to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms, saying “the offence before the court is a bailable one.” However, counsel to the prosecution, Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the bail application and urged the court to refuse the defendant bail.“This offence relates to the use of cyber crimes and it is a time bomb if it is not expeditiously addressed. It will not only affect our today, but also put our tomorrow in jeopardy and the image of the country,” he further argued. In his ruling, Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2, 000,000.00(Two Million Naira) with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 10, while the other must own a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court. The Judge further directed the EFCC to verify the status of each of the sureties. The case was adjourned to October 22, 23 and 24, 2019 for commencement of trial. The post Update: Naira Marley's fraud case adjourned till October 22nd for commencement of trial appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Longtime US senator, Thad Cochran dies at 81

Former US senator, Thad Cochran, a soft-spoken but powerful Republican who represented Mississippi in Congress for more than four decades has died today at the age of 81. His longtime spokesman Chris Gallegos said "Cochran's family extends its gratitude for the support shown to the senator by Mississippians over the years". A cause of death was not immediately disclosed. Late Cochran used his influence atop the Appropriations Committee to steer billions to his home state, one of the poorest in the nation, especially after it was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 President Donald Trump tweeted praise of Cochran noting that despite illness he returned to the Senate in 2017 to vote on an Affordable Care Act repeal measure that ultimately failed when former Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona voted against it, stunning the country. "Very sad to hear the news on the passing of my friend, Senator Thad Cochran. He was a real Senator with incredible values - even flew back to Senate from Mississippi for important Healthcare Vote when he was desperately ill. Thad never let our Country (or me) down!" Trump said. The post Longtime US senator, Thad Cochran dies at 81 appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
